Why do ski bindings need to be checked regularly?

The ski binding is one of the key safety components of ski equipment. It is responsible for protecting the skier from injury at the right moment – namely when the ski automatically detaches from the ski boot in the event of a fall or extreme force. At the same time, however, the binding must not release too early so as not to lose control of the ski.

Whether and when the binding releases is controlled by the so-called Z-value – this must be individually adapted to the skier’s physical conditions and skiing ability.

CHECK SKI BINDING

Why do ski bindings need to be checked regularly?

1. safety risks due to incorrect setting

A binding that releases too late or not at all can lead to serious injuries in the event of a fall – especially in the knee, lower leg or ankle area. A binding that releases too easily, on the other hand, can spring open unexpectedly, which can also lead to falls.

2. altered body values

Weight, height and riding ability can change over time – especially in children and adolescents, but also in adults (e.g. after a long break from sport or weight fluctuations). All these changes require an adjustment of the Z-value.

3. change of ski boots or bindings

If a new pair of ski boots is used or the binding is replaced or changed, the Z value must be recalculated and adjusted, as the sole length may change, for example.

4. annual maintenance recommended
Even if nothing has changed physically, the binding should be checked before every ski season. Ageing, material fatigue or mechanical defects can impair the functionality of the binding.
